What is Aqiqah?

Aqiqah is a recommended Sunnah, performed on the birth of a child.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

'Whoever wants to offer a sacrifice for his child, let him do so, for a boy; two sheep, Mukafaatan, (Two similar sheep that are slaughtered together), and for a girl, one.'
— Sunan an-Nasa'i

Muhammad b. 'Ali b. Husain quoted 'Ali b. Abu Talib as saying that God's messenger sacrificed a sheep on the seventh day for al-Hasan and said, "Shave his head, Fatima, and give the weight of his hair in silver as sadaqa."
— Mishkat al-Masabih

It is customary to:

• Sacrifice livestock (1 goat for a girl, 2 for a boy)
• Shave the baby's head and donate the weight in silver as Sadaqah
• Share the meat with family, friends, and the poor
