Blackburn UK Trust Partners with Uganda Child Cancer Foundation to Support Childhood Cancer
Blackburn UK Trust is proud to share its new partnership with the Uganda Child Cancer Foundation (UCCF) and the Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI), focused on supporting children in Uganda who are fighting cancer. On April 23, 2025, we made a significant contribution of Shs4.5 million to help fund the construction of a vital hostel for young cancer patients. Additionally, we are sponsoring the forthcoming Childhood Cancer Colour Run. This partnership is dedicated to enhancing the care, support, and hope for children undergoing cancer treatment in Uganda.
Addressing the Challenge of Cancer Treatment in Uganda
In Uganda, many children with cancer face overwhelming challenges in accessing treatment. Due to long travel distances and high costs, many are forced to abandon their treatment, significantly reducing their chances of survival.
The Rising Cancer Cases in Uganda
Statistics from the Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) reveal that 700 new cases of pediatric cancer were diagnosed in 2022, with the figures continuing to rise. Unfortunately, at least 30% of these children abandon their treatment, primarily due to financial and logistical barriers.
The Impact of Abandoning Treatment
Abandoning treatment significantly reduces their chances of survival. For many, this marks the beginning of a difficult and heartbreaking journey.
UCCF's Vision to Build a Hostel
To tackle this critical issue, the Uganda Child Cancer Foundation (UCCF) has unveiled plans to construct a Shs2.6 billion hostel near UCI. This facility will provide free accommodation for children and their families, allowing them to stay close to the hospital and receive uninterrupted care.
Blackburn UK Trust’s Contribution
Blackburn UK Trust is proud to contribute to this noble cause with our recent donation. This donation will help in the construction of the hostel and ensure the continuity of treatment for children who might otherwise have to abandon it due to distance and cost.
The Childhood Cancer Colour Run
An essential part of this initiative is the Childhood Cancer Colour Run, an annual event organised by UCCF to raise both awareness and funds for childhood cancer treatment.
Event Details
This year’s run is scheduled for May 18, 2025, at the Uganda Cancer Institute. The event will offer both 5 km and 10 km routes, promising a fun-filled day for participants while supporting a vital cause.
Goal of the Event
The aim of this event is to raise Shs150 million, which will help cover the diagnostic challenges faced by children battling cancer, such as the costs of CT scans, X-rays, and transport needs. The funds will also go towards providing support for families during their treatment journeys.
